A celebratory dinner at a popular Barbeque Nation outlet in Gorakhpur’s City Mall turned into a public health scandal last Wednesday after a diner discovered a dead cockroach in his non-vegetarian biryani. Sachin Verma, a resident of PP Ganj and president of the local Vyapar Mandal, was hosting a party for his son’s birthday when the incident occurred, prompting the group to record a video that swiftly went viral.
In response to the outcry, the Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) conducted an immediate raid, collecting food samples and ordering the restaurant’s temporary closure. While the restaurant management has admitted to the lapse, authorities have mandated a complete hygiene overhaul and staff training before the outlet can resume operations.
Swift Administrative Action Follows Viral Outrage
The discovery of the pest in the main course caused immediate panic among the 20 guests, many of whom stopped eating mid-meal. According to Sachin Verma, the lack of hygiene in such a reputed establishment was “unthinkable.”
Addressing the lapse, Assistant Commissioner of Food Safety, Dr. Sudhir Kumar Singh, stated, “During our inspection, we found unhygienic conditions at the outlet. We have issued a notice and directed the operator to address all shortcomings.”
The restaurant manager, Dileep Kumar, also acknowledged the failure, stating, “I admit that a mistake has happened… We don’t know how this happened, but we are now focusing entirely on cleanliness.” The FSDA has since conducted a one-day training session for all mall restaurant staff to ensure strict adherence to safety protocols, including the mandatory use of aprons, gloves, and head caps.
A Pattern of Concern and Context
This is not the first time high-end buffet chains have come under fire for food safety violations in India. Similar incidents in other metropolitan cities have often highlighted a gap between premium pricing and actual kitchen standards.
In this instance, the quick escalation from a personal grievance to a viral social media post was the primary catalyst for government intervention. Following the inspection, the FSDA team led by officers Umashankar Singh and Shrinivas collected samples of not just the biryani, but also raw ingredients like gram flour (besan) and cashews for laboratory testing.
The restaurant remains shut under official orders, with a warning that any attempt to reopen without a successful re-inspection will result in the permanent cancellation of their food license.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
At The Logical Indian, we believe that the right to safe, hygienic food is a fundamental pillar of public health and consumer dignity. It is deeply disheartening when a moment of family joy and celebration is marred by such gross negligence. While the restaurant’s admission of guilt is a start, “mistakes” of this nature can have life-threatening health implications.
We commend the citizens for holding the establishment accountable and the authorities for their decisive action. True progress in our food industry will only come when empathy for the consumer outweighs the drive for profit, and when “premium” refers to the quality of hygiene, not just the decor. We must move toward a culture where safety is a non-negotiable standard, not an afterthought triggered by a viral video.
