In a disturbing case from Challakere in Karnataka’s Chitradurga district, a government school mathematics teacher has been arrested and remanded in judicial custody after allegations that he sexually assaulted a 16-year-old minor student and forced her to undergo an abortion to conceal the crime.

The accused, identified as H. O. Rajanna, has been booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act following a complaint filed by the district Child Protection Officer. Police have also registered a case against a doctor who allegedly performed the abortion at a private nursing home in March 2026.

Authorities say the alleged abuse began in 2025 and continued for months, eventually leading to the student’s pregnancy. After the complaint surfaced, police launched an investigation, recorded statements from those involved, and arrested the teacher, while child protection officials reached out to support the survivor and her family.

Allegations Of Abuse And Attempted Cover-Up

According to the police complaint, the incident dates back to August 26, 2025, when the accused allegedly first assaulted the student while she was returning from a local festival in the Challakere area. Investigators say the teacher continued to sexually exploit the minor over time, including incidents that reportedly took place on or around school premises. As the abuse continued, the student eventually became pregnant.

Police allege that when the accused learned about the pregnancy, he attempted to conceal the crime by arranging for an abortion. Investigators say the girl was taken to Lakshmi Srinivasa Nursing Home, where a doctor allegedly performed the procedure in the early hours of March 1, 2026.

Authorities believe the act was carried out without proper legal safeguards for a minor and may have been intended to hide evidence of the abuse. Officials say the case reflects a serious breach of trust, as the accused held a position of authority as an educator responsible for the safety and wellbeing of students.

The case reportedly came to light when teachers at the girl’s high school noticed signs that suggested she might be pregnant and alerted authorities. Their concerns eventually reached the district Child Protection Officer, Rekha N, who filed a formal complaint with the Talaku police in Challakere on April 9.

Based on this complaint, police registered a case under multiple provisions of the POCSO Act against the teacher as well as the doctor suspected of assisting with the abortion. Following the registration of the case, the accused teacher allegedly attempted suicide by consuming poison and was briefly hospitalised before being taken into police custody. Officials later confirmed that he was arrested and produced before a court, which remanded him to judicial custody as the investigation continues.

Investigation Continues As Evidence Emerges

Police officials have said that the investigation is ongoing and that authorities are collecting medical records, statements, and other evidence to establish the full sequence of events. Investigators are also examining whether any additional individuals were aware of the alleged abuse or helped conceal it.

Meanwhile, child welfare authorities and representatives from the Child Helpline Project have visited the survivor’s village to speak with her family and provide support services. Officials emphasised that the POCSO Act mandates strict legal action in cases involving sexual offences against minors and provides mechanisms to protect survivors during investigations and trials.

The incident has sparked concern among parents and members of the community, many of whom say it has shaken their trust in institutions that are expected to protect children. Schools are often viewed as safe spaces where young people can learn and grow, and cases involving educators accused of abuse tend to trigger widespread public outrage and calls for accountability.

Authorities have reiterated that the law treats crimes against minors with seriousness and that those found guilty can face stringent punishment under the POCSO Act, including long prison sentences. As the investigation unfolds, officials say their priority remains ensuring justice for the survivor while safeguarding her identity and wellbeing.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

Cases like this remind us of the profound responsibility entrusted to educators and institutions that shape young lives. When that trust is violated, the consequences are deeply damaging not only for the survivor but also for the wider community that relies on schools as safe and nurturing environments.

Addressing such crimes requires more than punishment after the fact; it calls for stronger prevention systems, robust child protection policies, and an environment where students feel safe speaking up without fear or stigma.
