The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has written to the Rajya Sabha Secretariat requesting the removal of Raghav Chadha from the post of deputy leader of the party in the Rajya Sabha, according to reports citing sources and news agency Press Trust of India (PTI).
In the same communication, the party also asked that Chadha should not be allotted speaking time from AAP’s quota in the Upper House, indicating a major shift in its parliamentary strategy. The party has proposed Ashok Mittal as the new deputy leader and urged the secretariat to formalise the appointment at the earliest.
The move comes amid evolving internal dynamics within the party’s parliamentary wing, though AAP has not publicly detailed the reasons behind the decision so far. The party currently has 10 MPs in the Rajya Sabha seven from Punjab and three from Delhi.
AAP Reshuffles Rajya Sabha Leadership
Sources told PTI that AAP formally informed the Rajya Sabha Secretariat of its decision to replace Chadha and requested that Mittal be recognised as the deputy leader of the party in the Upper House. The letter also reportedly stated that Chadha should no longer receive speaking slots from the party’s allocated time during debates in the House. The development signals a notable leadership shift within AAP’s parliamentary ranks and suggests the party may be recalibrating how it manages representation and debate participation in Parliament.
Chadha, a Rajya Sabha MP elected from Punjab in 2022, has been one of AAP’s most visible national faces and among the younger leaders in the chamber. Over the years, he has frequently spoken in Parliament on issues ranging from infrastructure and urban governance to economic policy and citizen welfare.
The decision to remove him from the deputy leadership role has therefore attracted attention among political observers, especially because the party has simultaneously asked the House not to allocate speaking time to him from its quota an unusual request that highlights the seriousness of the organisational reshuffle.
Meanwhile, Ashok Mittal an MP from Punjab and founder-chancellor of Lovely Professional University has been proposed as the new deputy leader. If formalised by the secretariat, Mittal will assume a key organisational responsibility in coordinating AAP’s parliamentary strategy in the Rajya Sabha alongside other senior leaders of the party.
Political Context And Chadha’s Role In AAP’s Rise
Raghav Chadha has been associated with the Aam Aadmi Party since its early years and rose quickly within the organisation as one of its youngest and most prominent spokespersons. Before entering the Rajya Sabha, he served as a Member of the Delhi Legislative Assembly from Rajinder Nagar and also held the position of vice chairman of the Delhi Jal Board. He was elected to the Upper House in 2022 by the Punjab Legislative Assembly, becoming one of the youngest MPs in the Rajya Sabha at the time.
Within Parliament, Chadha has been an active participant in debates and policy discussions. He has raised concerns on issues such as traffic congestion in major cities, toll collection practices on highways, and broader governance reforms. His visibility in parliamentary debates and television appearances helped shape his public image as one of AAP’s articulate national leaders and a prominent voice for the party in national politics.
The Aam Aadmi Party itself has gradually expanded its presence in the Rajya Sabha over the past few years, particularly after its decisive victory in Punjab’s 2022 Assembly election. With 10 MPs currently in the Upper House most from Punjab the party has sought to strengthen its role in national legislative debates. Leadership positions such as the deputy leader help coordinate speaking time, manage parliamentary strategy, and represent the party during discussions and negotiations in the chamber.
Against this backdrop, the decision to replace Chadha with Ashok Mittal reflects a strategic shift in how the party intends to structure its leadership in Parliament. However, the absence of an official explanation from senior party leaders has left room for speculation about the reasons behind the change. Observers say such internal adjustments are common in political organisations, especially as parties reassess responsibilities and roles within their parliamentary teams.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
Leadership reshuffles within political parties are a normal part of democratic functioning. Yet when prominent public representatives are reassigned or removed from key positions, transparency and communication become crucial for maintaining public trust. Citizens expect clarity about the decisions that shape their representation in Parliament, particularly when those decisions affect who speaks on their behalf in legislative forums.
Political parties across the spectrum often emphasise accountability and democratic values. Demonstrating these principles internally through open communication, respectful dialogue, and clear reasoning behind leadership changes can strengthen democratic culture and reduce speculation or polarisation.
