In a compelling story of determination, Sonu Mehra from Badagaon in Rajasthan’s Tonk district has emerged among the top scorers in the Rajasthan Board of Secondary Education (RBSE) Class 12 Science examination 2026, securing an impressive 99.80%. The results, announced on March 31, have brought pride to his family and community, particularly given his modest background as the son of a daily-wage labourer.
Despite financial constraints and limited access to resources, Sonu relied on self-study and teacher support to excel. His achievement has been widely praised by educators and locals, while he now aspires to clear the UPSC examination and work towards improving access to education for underprivileged children.
From Financial Struggles to Academic Excellence
Scoring 499 out of 500 marks, Sonu Mehra’s performance places him among the highest achievers in the state’s Science stream. His father, a painter, faces irregular employment, making it difficult to sustain household expenses, including education. Due to financial challenges, Sonu had to move from a private school to a government institution after Class 8.
Undeterred, he remained focused on his studies, often relying on self-discipline and guidance from his teachers, who supported him with additional coaching. Teachers have described him as consistent and deeply committed, noting his strong grasp of core subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Sonu has credited his success to his parents’ sacrifices and his mentors’ encouragement.
A Journey Rooted in Resilience and Support
Hailing from a rural setting with limited educational infrastructure, Sonu’s journey reflects the realities faced by many students across India’s underserved regions. Without access to extensive coaching facilities or advanced digital tools, he devoted long hours to studying and revising concepts independently.
His success has sparked celebrations in Badagaon, where residents see his achievement as a symbol of hope and possibility. Family members and teachers have highlighted how collective support and perseverance played a crucial role in his journey. His story adds to a growing number of examples of students from economically weaker backgrounds achieving academic excellence despite systemic barriers.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
Sonu Mehra’s achievement is a powerful reminder that talent and ambition are not limited by geography or socio-economic status. His journey highlights the urgent need to ensure equitable access to quality education, mentorship, and resources for students in rural and marginalised communities. While individual stories of success inspire, they also underscore the gaps that still exist in our education system. Encouraging and investing in such potential can pave the way for a more inclusive and empowered society.
