Officials said the continued circulation of the letter, even after clarifications, risked confusing voters and undermining confidence in the electoral process. A senior police official reportedly described the content as “misleading in nature” and warned that such material, if unchecked, could disrupt public order during a sensitive election period.
Authorities also stressed that the move was not aimed at curbing free speech but at preventing the spread of misinformation that could influence electoral outcomes. Reports indicate that notices were sent across a wide range of accounts, including commentators and journalists, highlighting the scale and urgency of the response.

The controversy began after a document surfaced online appearing to show an official Election Commission communication bearing the BJP’s Kerala unit seal. The poll body later clarified that the issue stemmed from a “purely clerical error”, explaining that a document submitted by the BJP with its seal was inadvertently shared with other political parties without removing the symbol.
Kerala’s Chief Electoral Officer reportedly termed the lapse a “serious error” and confirmed that disciplinary action had been initiated against the official responsible, with further inquiry underway. However, the explanation has not fully calmed the political storm. Opposition parties, including the CPI(M) and Congress, criticised the lapse and raised concerns about institutional independence.
