Two passengers were killed and 23 others injured after a double-decker sleeper bus arriving from Rajasthan lost control and overturned near the Jhandewalan temple in Delhi’s Karol Bagh area at approximately 1:00 am on Wednesday, March 25, 2026.

The vehicle, carrying nearly 30 passengers from Jaipur, flipped onto its side near Hanuman Mandir Chowk, trapping commuters amidst shattered glass and mangled metal. Emergency responders, including the Delhi Fire Services and local police, launched a swift rescue operation aided by residents and a nearby JCB machine to extricate those pinned under the wreckage.

While the injured are receiving treatment across various city hospitals, the driver has been detained as authorities investigate whether overspeeding or mechanical failure led to the tragedy

Chaos at Jhandewalan: A Midnight Rescue

The silence of the early morning was shattered by the cries of trapped passengers as the bus, destined for Fatehpuri, came to a crashing halt beneath the Delhi Metro line. Visuals from the site depicted a harrowing scene of devastation: wheels ripped from the chassis, seats uprooted, and personal belongings scattered across the road.

“The passengers were trapped inside and crying for help,” a senior police official noted, describing the urgency of the moment. Among the victims, 30-year-old Shehbaj Alam from Uttar Pradesh has been identified, while the identity of a second male victim remains unknown.

Local heroes and patrolling staff played a critical role in the immediate aftermath; a passerby using a JCB helped stabilize the bus, allowing Constable Rohit and others to pull 23 survivors from the debris.

Investigating the Cause: Safety or Negligence?

Initial reports suggest the driver, identified as 26-year-old Pankaj Kumar from Alwar, may have lost control while navigating the stretch near the temple.

While Kumar is currently being treated under police custody at Lady Hardinge Medical College, investigators are probing multiple angles, including potential driver fatigue and the vehicle’s mechanical health.

This incident adds to a grim tally of recent road mishaps in the region, coming just weeks after a similar double-decker collision on the Yamuna Expressway. Traffic in the Karol Bagh area remained heavily disrupted for several hours as cranes worked to clear the heavily damaged bus, serving as a stark reminder of the risks associated with long-distance night travel.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

At The Logical Indian, we believe that every life lost on our roads is a systemic failure rather than just a “mishap.” While the bravery of the local residents and the quick action of the Delhi Police deserve our highest praise, we must ask why our safety protocols for long-distance sleeper buses remain so fragile.

True progress is not just about building faster highways; it is about ensuring that those who travel them are protected by stringent speed regulations, well-rested drivers, and vehicles that are fit for the road.

We extend our deepest empathy to the families of the deceased and hope for a speedy recovery for the injured. It is time we prioritize human life over the rush of reaching a destination.
