A student is battling for her life after an unidentified assailant threw acid on her in the Vadgaon Pan area of Sangamner, Maharashtra, on Tuesday, March 17. The minor was cycling home from school in the afternoon when she was intercepted on a rural ‘kuccha’ road and attacked.

Locals rushed to her aid following her cries for help, and she was subsequently admitted to a private hospital in Loni with approximately 7% burn injuries to her face and body. While the police have registered an FIR under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and are currently reviewing CCTV footage to identify the suspect, the incident has sparked widespread outrage and calls for stricter law enforcement in the region.

Medical Emergency And Police Action

The victim, a student at the local Zilla Parishad school, was about 3 to 4 kilometres away from her home when the attack occurred. Sangamner Deputy Superintendent of Police, Kunal Sonawane, stated, “The girl was bicycling home… while she was on a ‘kuccha’ road that goes through the farms, an unidentified person threw the corrosive substance at her face and fled the scene.”

Authorities have registered a case under BNS Sections 124 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by use of acid) and 126 (wrongful restraint). Under the leadership of SP Somnath Gharge, multiple police teams have been formed to track the culprit, focusing on witnesses and digital evidence from the school’s vicinity.

State Response And Local Unrest

The brutal nature of the crime has drawn sharp reactions from state officials and political leaders. Women and Child Development Minister Aditi Tatkare described the incident as “horrendous” and confirmed that the state government would bear all treatment costs through the Nirbhaya Scheme.

Meanwhile, opposition leaders have raised concerns over the safety of women in the state. Congress MLA Vijay Wadettiwar criticised the administration, noting that such attacks suggest “criminals no longer fear the police.”

This incident follows closely on the heels of another violent assault in the nearby Rankhamb village, further heightening the sense of insecurity among Sangamner residents, who are now demanding swift and exemplary punishment for the perpetrator.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

At The Logical Indian, we are deeply shaken by this cowardly act of violence against a child. An attack of this nature is not just a crime against an individual but a strike against the collective safety and freedom of every girl who dreams of an education.

While we welcome the government’s promise of financial aid, the core issue remains the easy accessibility of corrosive substances and a societal failure to foster a culture of respect and safety. We believe that true “justice” involves more than just an arrest; it requires a systemic overhaul where no child has to look over her shoulder while cycling home from school. We stand in solidarity with the victim and her family during this harrowing time.
