A passenger died and at least six others were injured after a private sleeper bus travelling from Nachna in Jaisalmer to Ahmedabad caught fire around 3.30 am on Friday near Dhanera while most passengers were asleep. According to preliminary reports, the bus was carrying about 16 passengers when a sudden blaze, suspected to have been triggered by a short circuit in the vehicle’s air-conditioning unit, rapidly engulfed the vehicle.

In the chaos that followed, passengers reportedly broke windows and jumped out to escape the flames. One passenger sustained severe burn injuries and was initially rushed to a hospital in Dhanera before being referred to Palanpur, where he later died during treatment.

Several others suffered minor burn injuries and received primary medical care. Authorities from the Dhanera police administration reached the site and have launched an investigation into the incident, while the bus operator said the fire destroyed passengers’ belongings, including luggage, documents and mobile phones, leaving many unable to contact their families immediately after the accident.

Passengers Escape Through Windows As Flames Spread Quickly

According to preliminary accounts from passengers and officials, the fire broke out suddenly in the early hours of Friday when most travellers were asleep inside the sleeper bus. Within minutes, the flames spread rapidly through the vehicle, triggering panic among those onboard. With limited time to react and smoke quickly filling the bus, many passengers reportedly broke open the windows and jumped out to save their lives.

While this desperate escape helped several people avoid severe injuries, a number of passengers suffered minor burns and other injuries while trying to exit the vehicle. One passenger, however, was unable to escape in time and suffered critical burn injuries before being rescued.

He was first taken to a hospital in Dhanera for emergency treatment and later referred to a medical facility in Palanpur due to the severity of his condition. Doctors at the hospital stated that the victim was brought in a very critical state and despite efforts to stabilise him, he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

Meanwhile, other injured passengers were treated for minor burns and shock. Nirmal Raiyani, operator of Swagat Travels, said the Nachna Ahmedabad service had been introduced only three to four days earlier. Speaking about the incident, he said the company immediately dispatched a team to the location after receiving information about the fire. Raiyani added that the intensity of the blaze destroyed passengers’ belongings, including luggage, mobile phones and important documents, which has made it difficult for some survivors to reach out to their families and inform them about their safety.

Police Probe Cause Of Fire Amid Growing Safety Concerns

Following the incident, police and local administration officials in Dhanera reached the spot and began a detailed investigation into the cause of the blaze. Early indications suggest that the fire may have been triggered by an electrical fault, possibly a short circuit in the air-conditioning system of the bus, though authorities have said that the exact cause will be confirmed only after a thorough technical inspection.

Investigators are expected to examine the vehicle’s electrical wiring, air-conditioning unit and other components to determine whether mechanical failure, maintenance lapses or other factors contributed to the incident. Officials are also likely to record statements from passengers and the bus crew to piece together the sequence of events leading up to the fire. The tragedy has also revived concerns about the safety standards of private sleeper buses operating long-distance routes, particularly those travelling overnight when passengers are asleep and evacuation becomes more difficult.

Notably, a similar tragedy occurred on 14 October 2025, when a private bus travelling from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur caught fire, resulting in the deaths of 29 passengers due to severe burn injuries while several others were injured. That incident sparked widespread discussion about fire safety, vehicle maintenance and emergency preparedness in long-distance bus travel. However, investigations into that case are still ongoing, and the recurrence of another bus fire has once again drawn attention to the urgent need for stricter safety checks and oversight in the sector.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

Tragic incidents like this remind us how quickly everyday journeys can turn into life-threatening situations, especially when safety measures fall short. For millions of people across India, long-distance buses remain one of the most accessible and affordable modes of travel. However, affordability should never come at the cost of safety.

Regular vehicle inspections, strict adherence to electrical and mechanical safety standards, functional fire extinguishers, clearly accessible emergency exits and better emergency response training for drivers and staff are crucial safeguards that could help prevent or minimise such disasters. The loss of life in this incident, along with the trauma experienced by survivors who were forced to jump from a burning vehicle to save themselves, highlights the importance of proactive action rather than reactive responses after tragedies occur.
