Simrandeep Kaur, the daughter of a vegetable farmer from Birarhwal village in Patiala, has secured All-India Rank 15 in the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2025. A postgraduate in Political Science from Khalsa College, Kaur achieved this milestone in her fourth attempt through disciplined online preparation and a 12-hour daily study routine. Her success is being hailed by local officials as a landmark for rural Punjab.
Her family plans a pilgrimage to Sri Harmandir Sahib in gratitude for her achievement. Kaur now aims to enter the IAS to focus on rural development and grassroots administrative reforms, reflecting her commitment to bringing positive change to her community.
Persistence Pays Off: A Journey Through Four Attempts
Hailing from the Nabha tehsil, Simrandeep Kaur’s success is a story of unwavering determination. Despite falling short in three previous attempts where she had cleared the Preliminary stage but missed the final list—she remained steadfast. Relying on her academic background in Political Science and International Relations (PSIR) as her optional subject, she maintained a rigorous 12-hour daily schedule, balancing online classes with mentorship.
“Being a girl from a village, I understand the challenges faced by rural communities firsthand. I want to work for the development of villages and contribute towards improving the lives of people living there,” Kaur shared during an interview.
Her father, Kuldeep Singh, who cultivates potatoes and vegetables to support the family, expressed his joy through tears of gratitude. “For a farmer’s daughter to reach such heights is a moment of pride for the entire state. If a person works hard and stays determined, nothing is impossible,” he noted, adding that the family never previously held a government position.
Inspiring Rural India: Background and Institutional Pride
Simrandeep’s academic journey was rooted in Patiala, where she attended Dayanand Public School before completing her graduation and post-graduation at Khalsa College. Her success has not only galvanised her village but also drew praise from administrative circles. Deputy Commissioner Varjeet Walia congratulated the achievers, stating that such results reflect the “strong academic culture and determination of the youth” in the region.
The Principal of Khalsa College, Dr. Dharminder Singh Ubha, also noted that Simrandeep who had previously cleared the UGC-NET serves as a beacon of hope for students who believe that lack of urban resources is a barrier to success. “Simrandeep has always been a very hardworking student. Her success will not only inspire our current students but makes the entire Patiala district proud,” he said.
During her UPSC interview, she was notably questioned on Punjab’s agricultural economy and the need for industrial shifts to solve the state’s financial crisis a subject close to her roots as a farmer’s daughter.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
At The Logical Indian, we believe that Simrandeep Kaur’s achievement is more than just a personal milestone; it is a powerful rebuttal to the idea that excellence is the monopoly of those with elite backgrounds. Her desire to remain connected to her roots and serve rural India embodies the spirit of empathy and social responsibility we champion.
In a country where the rural-urban divide often dictates access to opportunities, stories like hers remind us that with patience and institutional support, humble origins can lead to extraordinary outcomes. We hope her journey encourages a more inclusive administrative future where policymakers have a lived understanding of the struggles they seek to solve.
