The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee has announced that the Joint Entrance Examination Advanced (JEE Advanced) 2026 will be conducted on May 17, 2026, with the registration window opening on April 6 for foreign nationals and April 23 for Indian candidates, and closing on May 2.
The exam, which serves as the gateway to undergraduate programmes at the Indian Institutes of Technology, will be held in computer-based test (CBT) mode at centres across India in two sessions on the same day.
Only candidates ranked among the top 2,50,000 in Joint Entrance Examination Main 2026 Paper 1 will be eligible to apply. Admit cards will be available from May 11 to May 17, while the final results are expected to be declared on June 1, 2026, followed by the start of counselling through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA).
Key Dates, Registration Process And Exam Format
According to the official schedule released by IIT Roorkee, the application process for JEE Advanced 2026 will be conducted online through the official portal. Registration for foreign nationals, Overseas Citizens of India (OCI), and Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) will begin on April 6, 2026, while Indian candidates who qualify in JEE Main will be able to apply from April 23, 2026. The registration window for all candidates will close on May 2, with the last date for completing fee payment set for May 4.
Candidates will be able to download their admit cards between May 11 and May 17, giving them nearly a week to check their examination details. The examination itself will take place on Sunday, May 17, and will consist of two compulsory papers. Paper 1 will be held from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, while Paper 2 will take place from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM. Each paper will test students on Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, and both must be attempted to be considered for ranking.
The test will be conducted entirely in computer-based format at designated examination centres across India. To make the exam accessible to a wider group of candidates, the question papers will be available in English and Hindi. Officials have advised candidates to regularly check the official website for updates regarding exam guidelines, admit cards, and other notifications related to the examination.
Eligibility Criteria And Post-Exam Timeline
JEE Advanced remains one of India’s most competitive engineering entrance examinations and has strict eligibility rules. Only candidates who secure a rank among the top 2,50,000 candidates in JEE Main 2026 (BE/BTech Paper 1) will be allowed to register for the exam, regardless of category. This screening ensures that only the highest-performing candidates from the national-level JEE Main examination move forward to the advanced stage.
Additionally, aspirants can attempt JEE Advanced a maximum of two times, and the attempts must be taken in two consecutive years. Candidates must also have appeared for their Class 12 (or equivalent) examination for the first time in either 2025 or 2026, with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.
Students who have previously secured admission to any IIT are not eligible to appear again. These eligibility rules aim to maintain fairness while ensuring that aspirants meet the academic requirements for rigorous engineering programmes at IITs.
Following the examination, the candidate response sheets will be released on May 21, enabling students to review their recorded answers. The provisional answer key is expected to be released on May 25, after which candidates will be allowed to submit feedback or objections until May 26. The final answer key and results are scheduled to be announced on June 1, 2026, marking the beginning of the next stage in the admission process.
After results are declared, qualified candidates will participate in the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling process for admission into various engineering programmes across the IITs and other participating institutes. Students interested in architecture programmes at IITs will also be able to register for the Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT) shortly after the results are announced.
Each year, lakhs of students appear for JEE Main, but only a small fraction qualify to attempt JEE Advanced, making it one of the most selective entrance examinations in India. Success in this exam opens the doors to 23 IITs across the country, which are widely regarded as among India’s most prestigious engineering institutions.
