A powerful magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Japan’s Kumamoto Prefecture in the Kyushu region at 4:27 p.m. local time on Tuesday, registering the maximum shindo 7 intensity on Japan’s seismic scale.
The shallow quake caused building collapses, fires, power outages, transport disruptions and injuries, while more than 150,000 people were advised to evacuate.
Authorities also recorded a strong aftershock within an hour and warned residents to remain alert for further significant tremors over the coming week. An initial tsunami advisory for the Ariake and Yatsushiro seas was later lifted after no major waves were detected.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said damage assessments were ongoing and urged people to prioritise their safety as emergency teams responded across the affected region.
Rescue Efforts Underway
The earthquake’s epicentre was near the city of Uki at a depth of around 10 kilometres, making the shaking particularly intense across Kumamoto and neighbouring prefectures.
Public broadcaster NHK showed collapsed buildings, damaged highway overpasses, fires and cracks in roads, while reports indicated parts of a shopping mall and pedestrian bridge had also been damaged. Around 48,300 households initially lost electricity, rail services including the Kyushu Shinkansen were suspended, and Kumamoto Airport temporarily halted operations.
Speaking to reporters, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said, “We have already been informed that people have been injured,” adding that authorities were assessing the full extent of casualties and property damage. Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara confirmed that no abnormalities had been detected at nearby nuclear power plants, including the Sendai facility.
Meanwhile, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) urged residents to stay prepared for further strong earthquakes, warning that aftershocks capable of reaching shindo 7 could occur over the next week, particularly within the next two to three days.
2016 Quake Offers Fresh Warning
The latest earthquake struck roughly 20 kilometres from the Hinagu fault zone, which was associated with the devastating Kumamoto earthquakes of April 2016 that killed more than 270 people and injured thousands.
JMA officials said Tuesday’s quake resulted from horizontal movement along two faults but stressed it was still too early to determine whether it was directly linked to the 2016 seismic sequence. Residents described scenes of panic as buildings shook violently.
Researcher Shayne Bowden, who was inside a public library near Kumamoto Station when the quake struck, recalled feeling “violent shaking” as his laptop slid across the desk while people quickly sheltered under tables before calmly evacuating. Outside, crowded convenience stores and public spaces reflected growing concern as helicopters circled overhead.
Japan, located on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, experiences frequent seismic activity and maintains one of the world’s most advanced earthquake monitoring and disaster response systems.
