A disturbing incident of sexual assault has been reported at South Asian University (SAU) in Delhi, where a female student was allegedly attacked by four men inside the campus premises on October 13. The victim stated that while walking near the campus auditorium, the men tore her clothes, touched her inappropriately, and made an attempt to gang rape her.
The incident triggered a police response after a PCR call to Maidan Garhi police station around 3 pm on Monday. The South District Deputy Commissioner of Police, Ankit Chauhan, confirmed that an FIR has been registered and a detailed investigation is underway. The first call was made by someone known to the victim and it was reported the the girl is missing, later, she was found injured at the college campus.
Students are protesting at the campus, the incident has also brought to light glaring lapses in South Asian University’s internal security systems. Students have raised serious concerns about several areas on the SAU campus, especially those under construction, which reportedly lack proper CCTV coverage and adequate lighting
Police Action and Ongoing Investigation
Following the distress call, police teams were promptly dispatched to the SAU campus to begin their probe. According to DCP Chauhan, the legal process will follow the victim’s statement, which has yet to be formally recorded in full. Early reports suggest the police are reviewing CCTV footage and gathering witness accounts to build their case.
The charges registered include attempted gang rape, sexual assault, and related offences. The accused remain unidentified publicly as the inquiry is at a sensitive stage. The university administration has expressed cooperation with authorities, emphasizing their commitment to student safety and legal compliance.
Student Protests and Campus Safety Concerns
News of the alleged assault has sparked widespread protests by students across SAU, who demand transparency and swift justice. Students gathered to raise their voices against violence directed at women and to call for stronger security measures on campus.
According to multiple student accounts, these blind spots provide opportunities for unwanted and unsafe encounters. They allege that despite the university’s claims of multi-tiered security and CCTV surveillance, crucial parts of the campus remain vulnerable. The students’ outcry points to an urgent need for comprehensive security audits and robust safety measures, particularly in isolated or developing sections of the university grounds.
According to Times Now, students have alleged that the university administration attempted to shift blame onto the victim by labelling her “mentally unstable” and questioning her credibility, suggesting she was hallucinating. They further claimed that the victim faced inappropriate and insensitive treatment from officials, who reportedly told her to “go and take a shower” and asked, “why did you step out from the hostel?” The students confronted the administration directly over these remarks, condemning what they described as victim-blaming and a lack of empathy towards the survivor.
This is not the first time SAU has grappled with safety concerns, but the severity of this incident has ignited renewed calls for institutional reforms. Many students and activists are urging the university to install more surveillance systems, improve lighting in isolated areas, and establish a robust counselling and grievance redressal system for survivors.

Broader Context: Women’s Security in Academic Spaces
Incidents such as these bring to the forefront the ongoing challenges surrounding women’s security in educational institutions across India. While campuses are meant to be spaces of learning and growth, inadequate safety protocols continue to expose students to risks.
Advocates stress the importance of a multi-pronged approach including awareness programmes, timely intervention mechanisms, and community engagement to foster safer environments. The SAU case highlights the need for sustained vigilance and institutional accountability to ensure that students can pursue education without fear.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
At the heart of this troubling episode lies a broader societal imperative – to create educational spaces where every individual feels secure, respected, and valued. The Logical Indian stands firmly with all survivors of sexual violence and calls for empathetic action that prioritises dignity and justice.
Transparent investigations, survivor-centric support systems, and proactive safety policies must be integral to institutional cultures. Beyond punitive measures, a culture of kindness, dialogue, and coexistence within campuses will pave the way towards truly inclusive learning environments.
