Early Wednesday morning on National Highway 531 in Bihar’s Saran district, a sand-laden truck collided with a private bus carrying 42 Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel en route for election duty.
Thirty-four jawans were injured, five of them critically, and were rushed to hospitals in Ekma, Chhapra, and Patna for treatment.
The truck driver fled the scene, prompting a police manhunt. Authorities used cranes and earthmovers for rescue operations and registered an FIR under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita to investigate the incident.
Collision Details and Rescue Efforts
The accident took place near Pandey Chhapra village around 3 am. The truck driver, allegedly speeding and losing control, collided head-on with the bus coming from the opposite direction. The front section of the bus was severely damaged, and windows shattered, trapping many personnel inside.
Local residents rushed to help, breaking windows to aid the evacuation. A 112 police team arrived soon after to assist rescue efforts. Injured personnel were first taken to Ekma Community Health Centre before being referred to Chhapra Sadar Hospital and then to specialised facilities in Patna due to critical injuries. Superintendent of Police Kumar Ashish confirmed the swift response and ongoing medical aid.
Background and Investigation Updates
The CISF personnel had arrived at Siwan railway station from Delhi and were travelling by bus toward Doriganj in Saran to carry out election duties. Preliminary police investigations indicate high speed and loss of vehicle control caused the collision.
The truck driver abandoned the vehicle and fled; police are actively tracing him using the vehicle registration. A magisterial inquiry has been ordered to examine the causes and circumstances in detail. The incident caused traffic disruptions which have since been managed through diversions as rescue and clearing operations continued.
