Three men have been arrested in connection with the alleged gangrape and murder of a 12-year-old girl in Baruipur, West Bengal, whose body was discovered in a pond on Sunday.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has assured the grieving family that his government will seek capital punishment for the perpetrators. The incident sparked violent protests, prompting a swift response from law enforcement, who have established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and detained further suspects. Former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has also demanded immediate justice, while the National Commission for Women (NCW) requested a detailed action-taken report.
Pursuit of Justice Amidst Tragedy
The tragic ordeal began when the young girl went missing from her home on 4 July, only for her mutilated body to be recovered in a sack the following day in Surjapur.
Acting on the family’s missing person report, the police updated the First Information Report (FIR) to include charges of rape, murder, and tampering with evidence under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the POCSO Act. Ananda Sardar, the prime accused, along with Pravas Mondal and Dibakar Sardar, were subsequently apprehended. Promising zero tolerance, CM Adhikari stated, “The family of the victim will get the justice in the way they want it. We will ensure capital punishment for the accused.”
The authorities have additionally promised that any police negligence in handling the initial missing person report will be met with severe disciplinary action.
Unrest and the Aftermath
The horrifying discovery ignited massive outrage, temporarily plunging Baruipur into chaos. An angry mob tragically lynched a 40-year-old man on mere suspicion of his association with the accused.
The unrest escalated as protesters blockaded the Sealdah-Namkhana railway tracks, attacked security personnel, and torched a police vehicle. In response to the violence, authorities imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) to curb unlawful gatherings. CM Adhikari condemned the retaliatory violence, noting a potential communal angle to the mob justice, and asserted that while the victim’s family will receive justice, those responsible for the rioting will also face the full force of the law.
Meanwhile, political leaders from various parties, including a TMC delegation, visited the bereaved parents to offer their support.
Mamata Banerjee On Offensive
The incident offers Mamata Banerjee her first chance to attack the BJP government since their win. Despite a Trinamool split, she leveraged her street fighter image by leading a rally past police barriers. She alleged being put under house arrest to stop her from visiting the grieving family. The BJP dismissed this as routine security.
A loyal TMC delegation visited the parents and strongly criticized Suvendu Adhikari for his absence. Meanwhile, the rebel TMC faction expressed faith in the state BJP government. Ultimately, this controversy provides a weakened Mamata an opportunity to firmly reclaim the opposition space in the state.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
At The Logical Indian, we believe that true justice is served through the rigorous, impartial application of the law, not through streets stained with retaliatory vengeance. Empathy and harmony must guide our collective grief, ensuring that outrage translates into systemic reforms like safer neighbourhoods and swifter policing rather than communal discord. As we navigate this sorrowful moment, we must ask ourselves: how can we, as a community, constructively channel our anger to build a society where our children are safe and the rule of law remains unbroken?
