Around 170 farmers, including nearly 20 women from Jewar in Uttar Pradesh, who gave their land for the development of Noida International Airport, took a symbolic inaugural flight on Monday to fulfil a lifelong dream as commercial operations officially began. The flight, organised as a gesture of gratitude, carried the land-donating families from Noida International Airport to Lucknow.
Officials and local representatives said the initiative acknowledges community participation in one of India’s most significant greenfield airport projects, while marking the start of passenger services at the new aviation hub.
From Farmlands to First Flights
The inaugural flight from Noida International Airport saw emotional scenes as farmers and their families boarded an aircraft for the first time in their lives. Among the passengers were women farmers from Jewar villages, many of whom had never experienced air travel before. The special flight was organised to honour families whose land was acquired for the airport project.
According to officials, around 170 farmers were part of the journey, including approximately 20 women. The group travelled on a ceremonial flight to Lucknow, marking both a symbolic beginning for the airport and a moment of recognition for local communities.
Jewar MLA Dhirendra Singh, who accompanied the passengers, said the moment reflects a new chapter in history and a matter of pride, honour and dignity for every farmer. He noted that the families who nurtured these fields for years are now part of a journey into the skies, adding that the sight reflects collective pride for the region and the country.
A Lifelong Dream Realised
For the women farmers in the group, many of whom had spent their lives tilling the very soil where the runway now sits, the experience was the fulfilment of an ‘unimaginable’ dream. The atmosphere at the terminal was charged with emotion as these first-time flyers, who had spent years watching aircraft from a distance, finally stepped inside one. Beyond the personal milestones, the airport currently features a capacity for 12 million passengers annually in its first phase, with one terminal and a runway designed to transform the economic landscape of western Uttar Pradesh.
Noida International Airport Begins Operations
Noida International Airport, located in Jewar in Uttar Pradesh’s Gautam Buddh Nagar district, has officially begun phased commercial operations. The airport is one of India’s largest upcoming greenfield aviation projects and is expected to serve the National Capital Region (NCR) as well as western Uttar Pradesh.
Officials have stated that the airport will gradually expand passenger services in the coming weeks, with airlines introducing scheduled domestic routes in phases. The first phase of the project is designed to handle millions of passengers annually, with long-term expansion plans expected to significantly increase capacity.
The airport has been positioned as a major infrastructure development aimed at reducing congestion at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport while improving regional connectivity.
