Bengaluru-based 15-year-old mountaineer Ujaan Shivarama has successfully summited Kang Yatse II (KY2), a 6,250-metre peak in Ladakh’s Zanskar range, at the age of 15 years and six months.
The ascent was completed amid heavy snowfall and temperatures of around -15°C, with Ujaan describing the climb as gruelling. His expedition included 14 experienced mountaineers and around 10 Sherpas, but only three climbers reached the summit. The team included climbers from India, France, the UK and the US. Ujaan’s achievement has been described in reports as making him one of the youngest Indian climbers to summit the peak.
However, the available reporting contains an important distinction: while the age comparison indicates that Ujaan was younger than another 15-year-old climber who had previously summited KY2, there is no formal Guinness World Record category for the youngest KY2 ascent.
Gruelling Climb Amid Severe Weather
Kang Yatse II stands at 6,250 metres at the eastern end of the Markha Valley region in Ladakh. Ujaan’s expedition involved trekking through Pensing, Sara, Markha, Hankar and Nimaling before establishing base camp and beginning the final ascent. The climb became particularly challenging because of harsh weather conditions at high altitude.
“Our team was of 14 experienced mountaineers and about 10 Sherpas, out of which only three managed to summit,” Ujaan said in a press release. He described the expedition as a “gruelling climb” in temperatures of around -15°C and heavy snowfall. “Many teams had attempted to summit but most failed,” he added.
The fact that only three climbers from the expedition reached the summit provides important context to the achievement. Ujaan was not undertaking the climb in isolation; the expedition involved experienced climbers and Sherpas whose support would have been crucial in navigating the demanding terrain and extreme conditions.
Young Climber Takes Himalayan Challenge
The expedition also highlights the demanding preparation required for young mountaineers attempting high-altitude peaks. Ujaan’s route through the Markha Valley included several stages before the final summit push, exposing him to progressively more challenging Himalayan terrain.
The expedition’s outcome also demonstrates the difficulty of KY2. Although around 14 climbers attempted the peak, only three successfully reached the summit, according to Ujaan’s account. The combination of altitude, snowfall, freezing temperatures and difficult terrain meant that reaching the top required more than physical endurance.
For Ujaan, the achievement comes at an age when most teenagers are still in school, making the scale of the expedition particularly striking. At the same time, the involvement of experienced mountaineers and Sherpas underlines the importance of training, preparation and professional support in high-altitude climbing.
