Transgenders In Odisha To Get BPL Status, Will Be Covered Under National Food Security Act

A welcome step
It is another day in India and transgenders continue to face discrimination on various fronts. Yes, there has been a new found vigor and zeal among governments to set the situation right. It is in the backdrop of this scenario what the Odisha government has done is commendable. The Odisha government has conferred the BPL status to transgenders. Conferring of BPL status would mean the transgenders of the state could now avail all the benefits conferred to BPL families.

Odisha leads the plaudits
The Odisha eunuch and transgender association has thanked the government for the initiative and so has other activists who have showered the government with plaudits for the progressive initiative. Adding to the conferring of BPL status, transgenders of the state are also included as beneficiaries of the National Food Security Act besides the Odisha government has started the Department of Social Security and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities for the purpose of implementing policy meant for transgenders.

The Logical Indian lauds the initiative taken by the Odisha government. We realize there is still much more work to be done given the fact that mainstreaming of transgenders is far from complete. Employment and perception gap of the society continues to be a big challenge for the transgender community. Let us stand for equality of transgenders and do our part in ensuring a speedy mainstreaming of transgenders.
