“I want to share an incident that happened a few days back. Me and my husband were at a cafe with a common friend. I normally asked my friend that which car does he own? He replied “Hyundai Verna”. Then I said, ”You got that car as dowry, right?” And I was shocked when he clearly said, “No I bought that by myself”.

The reason why I was shocked was that I already knew that he got that car as dowry. I mean if people are ashamed of accepting that they have taken dowry then why are they supporting that. And if you are taking dowry then you should have enough guts to accept it too. At that time, I looked at my husband and felt so lucky. I chose my life partner by myself, so it was a love marriage. My husband didn’t accept any dowry from my parents. We are both well educated and earning well. I thought this incident would be worth sharing.”

This is a kind of open secret. People take dowry and don’t accept it because deep in their hearts they know they have done wrong or, at least, they have done wrong in the eyes of society. Every one of us has friends who have taken dowry or given dowry. This tradition is in practice prevalently and more or less it leads to heinous crimes like female feticide, dowry killing, and mantel/physical harassment of daughters of India. It is high time we do away with this social evil; if we can abolish ‘Sati Pratha’ we can abolish ‘Dowry’ as well. Let us pledge not to give or take dowry and educates others as well.
